What is Ocean Literacy in Action?
Ocean Literacy in Action is a university outreach initiative developed by the Oceanographic Observatory at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF). Its main objective is to strengthen ocean and climate literacy through educational, communicational, and participatory actions.
The initiative is aligned with the principles of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNESCO/UN) and the 2030 Agenda, promoting an integrated understanding of the ocean as a central element for environmental, social, and climate sustainability.
Objectives
The initiative aims to:
- Promote Ocean Literacy as a foundation for environmental citizenship;
- Bridge science, education, and society through science communication;
- Train university students as multipliers of ocean-related knowledge;
- Contribute to climate literacy in both formal and non-formal educational contexts;
- Foster critical thinking about the relationships between the ocean, climate, and society.
Methodology
The action adopts a participatory and interdisciplinary approach, combining:
- Project-Based Learning (PBL);
- Critical and dialogical university outreach;
- Production of open educational resources (OER);
- Workshops, lectures, and training activities;
- Science communication through digital media (podcasts, videos, and social networks).
Activities are developed in partnership with schools, communities, educators, and public institutions, valuing knowledge co-production and social inclusion.
Expected outcomes
Throughout its implementation period (2025–2027), Ocean Literacy in Action aims to consolidate a set of educational, scientific, and social outcomes, including:
- Expansion of ocean and climate literacy among diverse audiences, particularly students from basic and higher education;
- Training of university students as Ocean Literacy multipliers, actively engaged in educational and science communication activities;
- Production and dissemination of open educational resources (OER), including teaching materials, videos, podcasts, and digital resources;
- Strengthening dialogue between universities, schools, and society, fostering knowledge co-production;
- Contribution to the implementation of the principles of the UN Ocean Decade (UNESCO/UN) at local and regional scales;
- Consolidation of Ocean Literacy as a cross-cutting axis within the outreach actions of the Oceanographic Observatory.
These outcomes are conceived as continuous processes, evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively throughout the project’s execution, in accordance with university outreach guidelines.
